It came with a 26P RX4. Speed is very similar but at different RPM. Personally I would have started with the Raker HO, it's a standard bass boat prop. The bow will lift more and you will get more speed in most cases. Your RPMs are a two low. Propping is a trial and error situation. Hopefully you work with a dealer who is either very familiar with your setup and boat brand, or one that loans you various props to try out.

The story begins in the mid s when the EPA decided it was time that outboard motor companies start to clean up the exhaust emissions of their motors.

At the time Evinrude and Mercury were the only major manufacturers of two stroke engines.

The time frame the EPA gave was going to be a challenge to both companies. Mercury decided to partner with Yamaha, they were already building some smaller models for Merc. That cooperation with four-cycle Japanese made outboards along with a very vigorous advertising campaign by Yamaha Corp.

Incorrect reporting by some national boating and fishing magazines added fuel to the incorrect perception. Outboard Marine Corp. In mid March Bombardier Corp. Swiftly BRP started making huge changes in the structure of the outboard builder. From a dealer standpoint the engine was instantly the best technology we had ever seen.

A computer controlled fuel injection system that delivered amazing fuel efficiency, instant throttle response, smooth quiet performance, and unparalleled hydrocarbon emissions. As Japanese engine builders continued their strategy to reinforce that they were making the smoothest, quietest, cleanest, and most fuel-efficient engines available.

Evinrude was actually doing it rather than talking about it. Fact: Not all four-stroke engines are fuel-efficient. Only fuel injected engines are. Carbureted four-cycle motors are NOT any more efficient than carbureted two strokes. Fact: Four cycle engines are not the cleanest motors available.

Fact: Based on independent research by leading consumer groups there is virtually no difference in full throttle sound decibel measurements of ANY engine. Usually it was a simple code to identify the year of the motor.Click here if you cannot view the newsletter.

We compare the fuel efficiency of the Evinrude E-TEC G2 with the Yamaha F on three different types of boats — center consoles, pontoon boats, and sportboats. The results are instructive. Veteran boaters still remember the old days when 2-stroke engines smoked, smelled, were hard to start, got poor fuel consumption, and left an oil slick on the water. When Yamaha and then other engine makers introduced large 4-stroke engines from 15 to 20 years ago, they were most all demonstrably more fuel-efficient than 2-stroke engines made by any manufacturer.

In collaboration with the University of Wisconsin, the all-new engine had been under development for 5 years, and the end result was a 2-stroke engine that had all of the advantages of a 2-stroke, as well as fuel efficiency that was as good as or better than 4-stroke engines in most RPM ranges -- and significantly better in the low RPM ranges. Today, we look at three tests of three different boats and compare them with published Yamaha test data on the same models.

It is about as close to an apples-to-apples comparison as practical. Take a look at the video and see what we mean…. With seating for 15 adults in comfort, the Sea Ray SLX brings friends and family along for a day of tow-sports, beach-combing, and harbor-hopping.

In less than one revolution of the flywheel, you are good to go. You have probably heard how quiet a 4-stroke engine is, the E-TEC is the same way, barely audible at idle and a pleasant low tone at high speed. The Merc is very noisy, especially when running at high throttle settings.

Maintenance is the greatest difference between the motors. Read an XS owners manual. If you live in a cold climate, winterizing an E-TEC is an easy and automatic procedure. There is no dealer required winterizing or any long drawn out affair such as with the Mercury.

It's that quick and easy. That is a deal that is hard to resist. We are here to help you with any type of engine, boating, or fishing question that you may have.

I have read reviews on the ETech and feel that it is a great engine. However, the boat dealer says the Mercury is better and that they have had problems with the ETech.

The more I read the more confused I get. I have heard the same from others using ETech. Can someone help me to clear up this confusion and decide which engine has the best value and least problems? Report Inappropriate Content. Message 1 of 2 25, Views. Reply 0 Kudos.

That is what we are here for.We briefly review this data. Each manufacturer has published the test data on their website. The test data both report the air temperature was the same during the tests at degree-F. Perhaps the most interesting data to compare in these tests is the top speed obtained, the rate of fuel flow, and the fuel economy in MPG.

The Mercury is sold through the Brunswick Mercury Racing operation, but is still considered to be a standard consumer model. The Mercury ENERTIA ECO propeller has been hailed as a "miracle propeller" that produces improvements in top speed and in fuel economy compared to other propellers that can be greater than percent, that is a 1. Having to purchase the more expensive premium or mid-grade fuel adds significantly to the overall operating costs, not to mention fewer places to gas up while on the water.

I can only assume that Mercury tested their Verado with the 91 octane gasoline to guarantee maximum performance, as the Mercury Boathouse Bulletin is a sales tool and they want it to showcase the motor at its best. I have felt that the jack plate was worth mph on a 15' Whaler. I am not sure if that speed relation holds true for a Ranger.

It is characterized as a "Bay" model, so I suspect the hull may not have a V-hull shape with deadrise very much more than degrees. The deadrise in a classic Boston Whaler foot hull is about degrees at the transom. To call it a "bay boat" is not quite correct. That is about the same dead rise angle as on a classic Boston Whaler foot hull. A foot has a bit more deadrise, around degrees. This kind of performance is what product developers would consider a break-through development and really shows what DFI can do when its mated to an internal combustion engine designed to take advantage of it.

I suspect that the 4-stroke makers would have to go to DFI more cost for them to match the efficiency. I really like this presentation because it plots MPG as a function of boat speed, not a function of engine crankshaft rotation speed. The plot does a nice job showing the advantage of the Evinrude E-TEC G2 over the other two engines, and particularly the huge improvement in fuel economy at low speeds, which as we have come to learn, is where boats spend a lot of their operating time.

The Yamaha range, on the other hand, is much narrower -- from about 24 to 34 MPH. As a practical matter, the G2 boat should be able to find a ride comfort zone that does not sacrifice much fuel economy.

I think things are more bouyant in salt water. I would presume the same boat would get better fuel economy on saltwater than freshwater.

Znid gpon 2428a

But I don't know to what extent there is a difference. I noticed the Verado and E-Tec were run on saltwater and the Yamaha was on fresh water. So it isn't exactly apples to apples but what I see is something I have seen for a long time. That is where the "pack" consisting of Honda, Yamaha, Suzuki and ETec getting relatively similar and good performance results both in mileage and speed, and the Verado way behind in speed and mileage. Not sure the latter is justifiable given the quality of the other choices.

This whole thread doesn't surprise me.

Look at every Whaler performance test on their website and then their competitors. There is clearly something with the design, engine, or both that makes them slower and less fuel efficient than the competition. Or is it the horses?

The Mercury Optimax vs. Evinrude dispute is no different. There are advantages and drawbacks to both kinds of motors. Some will matter more than others to you, and only you can decide which. If you keep even speeds in waters of lower-resistance, you will use less fuel. But there are still other factors to consider. Evinrude engines also use a battery but draw less power. Basically, starting up your engine could take a toll on your boats electrical load. So could all the other processes which require electricity in your boat.
